According to Zhang Yijun, director of the Laboratory of Lightning Physics and Protection Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, artificial lightning is to artificially trigger lightning to the ground under appropriate conditions of thunderstorms, so that the natural lightning that occurs randomly can be controlled. This experiment was included in the National Natural Science Foundation of China's "Tenth Five-Year Plan" key project. Through the scene data taken by the high-speed camera, the reporter saw that a small rocket rushed into the clouds with a thin wire, and a flash of lightning appeared between the clouds and the ground.

 

According to reports, the experiment was selected in Binzhou, Shandong. The northern part of Shandong is one of the regions where lightning occurs frequently in North China. The terrain of the Yellow River Delta is flat, and it is very suitable for artificial lightning in the field and large-scale collaborative observation. The construction of the ground automatic weather observation network and the new generation weather radar network can provide good technical support for the experiment.

 

According to rough statistics, the number of casualties caused by lightning strikes in China each year is as high as thousands, and the economic losses caused by them are as high as 10 billion yuan. Lightning experiments show that artificially induced lightning has a certain effect on thunderstorm electric fields and cloud physical processes, which makes artificial lightning induction an effective means of artificially affecting the weather. The success of this experiment pushed the level of lightning research and early warning across the country to a higher level, and provided a scientific basis for establishing lightning protection technology with China's independent intellectual property rights.
